Richard Parrish : FEAR NO COLOR:
Color Theory for Kiln-Glass

glass_color_bar.jpg

How does color work?  What makes some combinations of color more effective than others:  This class will explore color principles, theory and applications using kiln-glass techniques.  The purpose is to increase the student's understanding of color and how to use it in glasswork to make pieces that are more beautiful and in which color reinforces the artist's intent.  We will begin with an exploration of conventional color theory and do exercises in kiln-glass to illustrate how this theory is informed by the qualities of glass, including transparency, opalescence, reflection, refraction, transmission, absorption and depth.  A final project will allow participants to put this knowledge to work.

 "I'm not Creative" .... "I Can't Draw" .... "I'm not Talented enough for That"

At FUSIONS Studio, we've heard these words only from Adult students, but never from our kid students.  Let's face it, we've said these words ourselves!  We often wonder at what age did we decide that we could not create something beautiful?

Catharine helps us get past these mis-conceptions about ourselves and on to creating.

Catharine Newell : Drawing From Experience

Fearless mark-making should be easy. We were good at it when we were toddlers. As adults strangled by self-consciousness and expectations, we tend to forget that simple actions, when done with intelligence and commitment, become something powerful. This course empowers the timid (but optimistic) among us to draw using our native talent and life experience as points of inspiration. Charcoal, ink and pencil sketches lead to exercises that explore a range of materials for drawing with and on glass, including powders, frit, stringers, stains, Glassline and more.

Catharine Newell : A Particulate Language

The focus of this course is toward developing and refining a skilled, intuitive and uniquely individual approach to mark making using sheet glass and powders.  Sketches and single layer studies will lead to black and white, as well as color, independent projects.  Participants will expand their kiln-forming skills while acquiring a greater understanding of material, composition, line, spatial perspective, layering strategies and use of color. Relevant experimentation with materials and strategies for invention will be encouraged and the creative process of moving from idea to concept sketches toward final resolution will be stressed.
